Solanum tuberosum
The Valor potato is a resilient UK-bred cultivar introduced in 1993 by Caithness Potato Breeders. It was selected for its robust performance across challenging conditions, and has since earned a strong reputation with growers for dependable yields and reliable results. In South Africa, Valor is especially valued for its ability to handle heat, drought and disease without compromising on quality.
This is a versatile all-rounder in the kitchen. Valor produces round to oval tubers with shallow eyes. Its white, firm flesh holds well when boiled, making it ideal for stews, curries, potato salads and general table use. It also bakes beautifully and resists falling apart during cooking, offering a smooth texture and consistent flavour.
Livingseeds supplies plant-ready Valor tubers, so no chitting is required. Plant directly into warm, well-prepared soil at least 10 °C. Set tubers 10 to 15 cm deep, 30 cm apart with 75 cm between rows. Expect maturity from 90 to 110 days in warmer regions, and up to 140 days in cooler climates.
Valor is exceptionally hardy in the field. It shows strong resistance to tuber blight, splitting and bruising, and copes well with limited water or high temperatures. These qualities make it a smart choice for low-input or organic growing systems where reliability is essential.
