Phaseolus vulgaris

Contender is an early maturing bush bean introduced in 1949, and remains one of the most dependable choices for home gardeners today. Although unassuming in name, it is a standout heirloom variety, known for its vigorous growth and ability to produce a harvest up to a week earlier than most other beans. It forms compact plants of about 45 to 60 cm tall and offers consistent, heavy yields of plump, tender pods.

The pods are smooth, stringless and reach 15 to 20 cm in length. They are sweet and flavourful when picked young, making them perfect for fresh eating, steaming or stir-frying. Contender also holds its shape well when preserved, making it suitable for canning and freezing. Its quick production and even maturity make it ideal for gardeners who want a steady and reliable crop.

Sow seeds directly into warm, well-drained soil after the last frost. Plant 2 to 3 cm deep, spaced 10 to 15 cm apart, with rows at least 40 cm apart. Germination typically takes 7 to 14 days at soil temperatures between 18 and 24°C. Do not soak seeds before sowing, especially in cooler soils.

Contender thrives in full sun and is well-suited to South African summers. It shows excellent resistance to common bean problems including powdery mildew, greasy pod and bean mosaic virus. Its tolerance of both warm and cooler conditions makes it a strong performer across a range of climates and planting windows.

For maximum yield and soil health, inoculate with SoyGro Beanflo before sowing. This beneficial microbial treatment enhances nitrogen fixation and supports robust plant growth, particularly in areas with no recent legume planting.

Standard packet contains approx. 25 seeds
Petite packet contains approx. 10 seeds

Using Beanflo-Rhizobium bacteria when planting your bean seed is the most cost effective way of putting nitrogen fixing bacteria into your soil, creating healthier soil for a more productive harvest.
