Lactuca sativa

A stunning loose-leaf heirloom introduced by Peter Henderson & Co. in the 1870s. This prolific producer of large, bright green, ruffled leaves has proven itself over the years as an outstanding garden performer. The flavour is exceptional; however, it is best planted in the cooler months to mitigate its low tolerance for heat.

Low bolt/heat resistance.

Ready for harvest around 50+ days.

Standard packet contains approx. 300 seeds

Petite packet contains approx. 100 seeds

What a lettuce! Sowed in mid March, just before the lockdown. By the first week of April I was harvesting leaves every 3rd day, and the plants have continued to produce solidly for 3 months with the first one only just starting to bolt.
The leaves are huge and crispy, and easy to pick.
With good mulching the plants don't require more than one watering a week, and they shrug off Johannesburg frosts (so far up to -4 degrees). Where my other lettuce varieties slowed down noticeably, this one just kept going.
Highly recommended as a prolific winter lettuce - 2 humans couldn't keep up with 6 plants!
