Phaseolus lunatus
The Whitesitt Family Baby Lima is a rare heirloom pole bean with roots tracing back to 1887, when the Whitesitt family relocated from Kansas to Montana, carrying this cherished variety with them. Grown and preserved for generations, this lima is a true dual-purpose bean: ideal for picking young when the pods are still tender and sweet, or left to mature into creamy, buttery beans prized in traditional dishes.
These beans shine in soups, casseroles, and classic butterbean stews. When harvested young, their crisp, mild flavour works beautifully in summer salads or steamed with herbs. Fully matured and shelled, they transform into a rich, smooth-textured bean that complements hearty, slow-cooked meals.
Sow seeds 25–30 mm deep in warm soil above 18°C. Pre-soaking isn’t required but may speed up germination. Direct sowing is preferred, once danger of frost has passed.
Being a pole variety, these plants require sturdy support and plenty of vertical space. They thrive in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Expect first young pods in about 65 days, with mature beans ready from around 85–100 days.
This variety has shown excellent resilience to common pests and diseases.
