Ocimum basilicum
Traditionally grown by the Ewe Tribe in Ghana, this basil variety is used in stews, soups and sauces as well as in juices and to flavour drinks. As is happening throughout the world, old traditional varieties are being lost to make way for commercial production of a few select varieties. This variety was saved from obscurity by Ghanaian seed saver Solomon Amuzu from seed gifted to him by an 86 year old Ewe elder. Through years of effort on his part, Livingseeds is able to offer this variety to the South African gardening community.
The leaves have a delicious flavour with hints of citrus. "Evivi Ntor" translated means very tasty. High notes of pepper and spice with hints of flowery citrus makes this an outstanding basil variety to grow and experiment with.
