Detroit Dark Red is one of the most famous beetroot varieties, released in 1892 by the DM Ferry Seed Co in Detroit MI. This heirloom has literally stood the test of time with over 200 years of producing one of the most favoured beetroot varieties for home gardeners and commercial farmers.

Topping the best variety lists for many many growers Detroit Dark Red is a real winner in the garden and in the kitchen.

DDR as it's affectionately known at Livingseeds is a consistent, well performing beetroot, yielding uniform roots of 5-7cm with a deep colour and fine grained texture. DDR makes for a fantastic pickled beetroot and many consider this variety to make a better pickle.
