Bophelo is a proudly South African-developed sweet potato variety bred for excellent yields, flavour, and disease resistance. Its name means “life” in Sesotho, and true to its name, Bophelo has become a lifeline for many growers thanks to its dependable performance and nutritious roots.

Bophelo sweet potatoes are characterised by their light copper skin and creamy yellow flesh. The roots are firm and mildly sweet, making them perfect for roasting, boiling, or steaming. Less sugary than orange-fleshed varieties, Bophelo is also ideal for savoury dishes and is a good choice for diabetic-friendly meals.

Plant slips 5–10 cm deep in warm, well-prepared soil once frost risk has passed. Rooting occurs best in soil temperatures between 20–30°C. Soaking is not needed for runners, but watering well after transplanting will help them settle quickly.

This variety thrives in loose, fertile soil and full sun. Space runners 25–30 cm apart in rows spaced 90–100 cm apart. Bophelo typically matures in 100–120 days. Water consistently during the first few weeks, then reduce to encourage root development. Avoid overwatering as harvest nears.

Bophelo is noted for its resistance to sweet potato virus disease (SPVD) and shows strong field tolerance to pests and environmental stresses. This makes it an excellent option for sustainable, low-input growing.
