Beta vulgaris

This outstanding heirloom variety from 1840 produces round, slightly flattened, deep red beets. They have a delectably sweet yet full-bodied beet flavour and are especially good when harvested small at around 7cm in size.

The beautiful purple/red leaves are also edible and can be cooked like Swiss chard. Best planted and grown in well-drained, rich soil. A great container variety.
