Gossypium hirsutum

Arkansas Green Lint is a rare heirloom cotton known for its naturally green fibres that make it a favourite among spinners and fibre artists. First developed in the American South, this variety has been preserved for generations thanks to its unique appearance and utility. Unlike typical white cotton, Arkansas Green Lint produces lint with a pale green hue and seeds that are deep green, adding to its visual interest in the garden.

Culturally valued for its dye-free green fibre, it is used primarily in spinning and handcraft textiles. The lint colour tends to remain vivid if harvested promptly, though it may fade when exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods. While not commonly used in commercial cotton processing, Arkansas Green Lint remains a cherished option for home-scale production and artisan work.

Seeds should be sown about 6 mm deep in well-draining soil after all danger of frost has passed. Seeds should be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Ideal germination temperatures range between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius, the Livingseeds Germination Pad is a must for starting these seeds early. Germination typically occurs within 7 to 21 days. Seedlings should be transplanted into full sun once nighttime temperatures remain above 13 degrees.

This cotton prefers compost-rich soil with consistent moisture and can grow up to 2 metres tall. Plants should be spaced about 1 metre apart to allow air circulation. Flowering occurs within 2 to 3 months, followed by boll development. Maturity is reached in approximately 130 to 155 days from sowing. Plants may need staking or fencing support due to their height and top weight. Harvest cotton bolls as soon as they open to preserve fibre colour.

Arkansas Green Lint has moderate resistance to common cotton pests and is well-suited to organic production.
