Brassica oleracea italica

A real gem in the garden. Green Sprouting broccoli does not produce a single large head like the hybrid broccoli’s. This one produces many small to medium heads that can be picked over an extended season. Leaves, buds and stalks are also tender and edible, a real winner in the garden. This variety requires a cold winter before it will start to produce heads.

I've never had much luck with broccoli, but these seeds germinated well and grew into healthy plants. Was super excited to see all the heads formimg! Then mousebirds arrived and ate them all down to the ground :( Still, I'm looking forward to growing them again (under cover this time).

I've already reviewed these, but wanted to add that they also did well from seed. My husband and I have sworn never to plant 'normal' broccoli again! These plants just keep on giving for ages. We had many successive harvests until the plants eventually flowered in October or so when it started getting too warm. Strongly recommend!

This is a delicious broccoli! Harvested my first stems yesterday and roasted them in the oven - just a little so they were still crunchy. I harvested the central stem, and I can see the side stems forming their own little heads now so am looking forward to harvesting more soon. I grew these from seedlings delivered to my by Living Seeds back in May. So they took at fair amount of time to get to harvest, but it has been very cold in the Cape.
