Rust

Puccinia spp.

Rust is one of the most recognisable fungal diseases in the home garden. It often begins as tiny orange, yellow, or brown pustules on the undersides of leaves. These dusty spores spread fast in moist conditions, especially when plants are closely spaced or watered from above. Garlic, beans, onions and roses are some of the more susceptible crops. Once infected, rust can cause leaves to yellow, drop prematurely, and significantly reduce the plant's ability to thrive.

Relying on curative treatments alone often leads to crop loss, increased costs and extra time spent in the garden managing repeated outbreaks. Preventative methods, on the other hand, stop the problem before it takes hold. For home gardeners, early action is always more effective and far less frustrating than trying to reverse damage once symptoms are visible.

Good air circulation and dry foliage are your first lines of defence. Space plants generously and prune lower leaves to encourage airflow. Avoid overhead watering and apply mulch to reduce splash-up of spores from soil. In crops with a known susceptibility to rust, a preventative foliar program is essential during key growth periods. Garlic, for instance, should be protected from early winter through spring in regions with cool, wet winters.

  • Organics

    • Biogrow Copper Soap
A certified organic fungicide effective against rust, powdery mildew, black spot, and other common fungal infections. It creates a protective layer on leaf surfaces that prevents fungal spores from germinating. Use preventatively every 2–3 weeks at a low dose, particularly in crops like garlic.
Can be combined with other Biogrow products for improved efficacy.

    • Biogrow Phyta
A plant health tonic that stimulates natural plant defences and improves resistance to fungal stress. Works well alongside Copper Soap, especially during high-pressure periods.
