Ipomoea batatas

Ndou is a South African-bred sweet potato variety developed for food security, high yields, and strong resistance to common field issues. Named “elephant” in Tshivenda, Ndou lives up to its name by producing large roots and thriving in challenging conditions.

Ndou features smooth, pale brown skin with white to creamy flesh that cooks to a soft, fluffy texture. Its flavour is mild and slightly sweet, well suited to both sweet and savoury preparations. It’s often used in traditional cooking, boiling, baking, or adding to stews.

Plant slips 5–10 cm deep in loose, fertile soil once the risk of frost has passed. Ideal rooting occurs at 20–30°C. Runners do not need soaking but benefit from good watering after planting to support quick establishment.

This variety grows vigorously in full sun with minimal fuss. Space runners 25–30 cm apart in rows 90–100 cm apart. Expect harvest-ready roots around 100–120 days after planting. Ndou responds well to organic fertilisation and consistent moisture early in the season.

Ndou is known for its excellent resistance to sweet potato virus disease (SPVD) and other common root pathogens, making it ideal for small-scale and resource-limited growers.

Ndou is well known for it's delicious creamy flesh. A high yielding variety that does not get too pithy even at a large size. Tubers are known to get to over 3 kgs each! Literally "the BIG one!"
