Phaseolus lunatus

Sieva Lima, also known as Carolina or Small White lima, is a treasured heirloom pole bean that has been grown in the American South since the 1700s. It was once cultivated by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, and its long-standing reputation for productivity and flavour has made it a favourite among traditional gardeners.

The beans are small, white, and slightly flattened, with a nutty flavour and creamy texture when cooked. They are excellent fresh as shelling beans or dried for long storage. Sieva Limas are a reliable choice for classic dishes like butterbean stews, bean salads, and other hearty meals.

Sow seeds 2 to 3 centimetres deep in warm soil once all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures remain above 15 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs best at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius and typically takes 7 to 18 days. Do not soak seeds before planting, as they may split.

The plants are strong climbers and need a sturdy trellis, growing up to 3 metres in height. They prefer full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Space plants 15 centimetres apart in rows 90 to 120 centimetres apart. Pods reach 7 to 10 centimetres in length and usually contain 3 to 4 beans. Harvest when pods are fully filled for fresh use or allow them to dry completely on the vine for dry beans.

Shows moderate resistance to heat stress and performs well in warm climates.

Standard packet contains approx. 25 seeds

Petite packet contains approx. 10 seeds

Using Beanflo-Rhizobium bacteria when planting your bean seed is the most cost effective way of putting nitrogen fixing bacteria into your soil, creating healthier soil for a more productive harvest.
