The Barbu d’Uccle, also known as the Belgian Bearded d’Uccle, is a true bantam breed that originated in Uccle, Belgium, in the early 1900s. Developed by Michael Van Gelder, it was first exhibited in 1905 and has become a popular ornamental bird due to its elegant plumage, compact size, and charming character.
In South Africa they are often called de-Ukkles, however this is a bastardisation of the correct pronunciation which is "Du-Clay".
Egg Production
Although not kept primarily for eggs, Barbu d’Uccle hens can lay between 100-200 small cream or white eggs per year. They lay steadily during warmer months but are not strong winter layers. The hens are known to go broody frequently, and they are excellent sitters and devoted mothers.
Appearance
This breed is especially prized for its striking appearance. Birds have heavily feathered legs and feet, full beards and muffs, and a small single comb. The tail is carried high, giving them a proud, upright posture. Colours are varied and include popular varieties such as mille fleur, porcelain, mottled, black, and white. Cocks typically weigh in at 700-750 g, and hens at 600-650 g.
Temperament and Behaviour
Barbu d’Uccles are friendly, curious, and affectionate birds. They enjoy human interaction, often perching on shoulders or following their keepers around the garden. Their calm and engaging nature makes them ideal for families and children. Roosters are generally mild in temperament, though, as with any breed, individual behaviour can vary during the mating season.
Care and Management
Their feathered legs and feet require dry, clean living conditions to avoid matting, mud buildup, or frostbite. Short grass or sand runs are ideal. Occasional grooming around the face and legs may be needed. While relatively hardy, Barbu d’Uccles benefit from shelter in very wet or cold weather due to their heavy feathering. They do well in both free-range and enclosed environments, provided they have space to scratch and explore.
Suitability and Use
Barbu d’Uccles are best suited for keepers seeking a decorative and friendly bantam. Their egg production is modest, but their beauty and broodiness make them ideal for hatching and raising chicks. They are also a favourite in poultry shows and ornamental collections. Their gentle nature means they integrate easily into mixed flocks and do well in urban or small-scale settings.
