Bountiful Butter is a sunny burst of garden delight in the form of a classic dwarf wax bean. Originally developed for its impressive yields and buttery flavour, this variety is celebrated for its vivid yellow pods that contrast beautifully with the deep green foliage. Its origins are traced to selections made for its culinary appeal and garden performance. Bountiful Butter has endured as a trusted favourite among growers who value dependable productivity, flavour and the visual charm of its bright yellow pods.
These tender, stringless beans are ideal for raw eating, bringing a sweet and mild crunch to salads and crudités. When lightly steamed or stir-fried, they develop a smooth, melt-in-the-mouth texture and a subtle nutty undertone. Their gentle flavour makes them a versatile addition to any kitchen, pairing especially well with lemon, garlic, and a variety of herbs. Harvested young, they’re perfect for showcasing in summer platters or preserving through pickling.
Sow seeds directly into warm, moist soil once all danger of frost has passed. Germination is most successful when soil temperatures remain consistently above 20°C. Avoid watering for the first few days after sowing to prevent rot, and ensure good drainage. Unlike climbing types, Bountiful Butter does not require staking, but benefits from a lightly mounded soil base for support during growth and to help keep the pod tips off the ground.
This variety thrives in full sun in well-prepared beds enriched with organic matter. Begin feeding with Talborne Organics VitaGrow at planting, switching to Vita Fruit and Flower once flowering begins, to support pod development. Regular picking encourages continuous production, often yielding over 300 grams per bush. Bountiful Butter matures rapidly, typically ready to harvest within 50–60 days, making it a quick, rewarding choice for both early harvests and staggered sowing throughout the warm season.
To enhance root development and boost yields, treat seeds with SoyGro Beanflo, a nitrogen-fixing bacteria product available from Livingseeds.co.za. This biological partnership enriches the soil naturally, supporting strong plant growth and contributing to long-term soil health.
Standard packet contains approx. 25 seeds
Petite packet contains approx. 10 seeds
Using Beanflo-Rhizobium bacteria when planting your bean seed is the most cost effective way of putting nitrogen fixing bacteria into your soil, creating healthier soil for a more productive harvest.
