Capsicum chinense
The 7 Pot Brain Strain Yellow is a ferociously hot chilli pepper bred by David Cappiello in 2008, originating from the super hot Trinidad 7 Pot family. This yellow variant earned its name from the wrinkled, brain-like texture of its fruit, which adds to its intimidating appearance. Though rare, it has become a favourite among hot pepper enthusiasts for its intense heat and striking fruit shape.
In the kitchen, this pepper delivers more than just searing heat. Beneath its blistering Scoville rating, typically between 1.2 and 1.6 million SHU, lies a bold, fruity flavour with citrus and floral undertones. When used in moderation, it creates powerful hot sauces, fiery salsas and spice blends that leave a lasting impression. Because of its high capsaicin content, gloves are essential when preparing this pepper in any form.
Seeds should be started indoors approximately eight weeks before your region's last frost date. Use a quality Germination Mix and maintain soil temperatures around 29 °C for optimal germination, which typically occurs within 7 to 21 days. Plant seeds no deeper than 5 mm, ensuring consistent moisture and bottom heat throughout the germination period. The use of a Germination Heating Pad is non-negotiable.
Once established, the compact plants reach around 90 to 120 cm tall and produce heavily wrinkled yellow pods about 5 to 6 cm wide. They thrive in full sun, well-draining soil and benefit from regular feeding during fruit development. Harvests can be expected approximately 100 to 110 days from transplant, with the vibrant yellow colour and firm pod texture indicating peak maturity.
