Black Strawberry is a dazzling cherry tomato that turns heads in every garden it grows in. Bred from a cross between Bosque Blue and Strawberry Tiger, this open-pollinated variety delivers a stunning medley of deep purples, vivid pinks, golds, and greens, all streaked with anthocyanins that intensify in full sun. These small, plum-shaped fruits are thick-skinned and firm, giving them a longer shelf life and a unique visual appeal that makes them a favourite for home gardens and market stalls alike.

The flavour is a balanced combination of sweet and tart, with subtle notes of grape and plum. While not as soft or juicy as some cherry types, the fruits lend themselves beautifully to slicing into salads, drying into snackable halves, or including in colourful salsas. Once fully ripe, their sweetness deepens, and they become a complex addition to cold dishes and gourmet spreads.

Start seeds indoors six to eight weeks before your final frost. Sow them 5mm deep in a warm Germination Mix. Maintain a temperature of 22 to 28°C by using a Germination Heating pad; this will give you a faster, more even germination. Germination usually takes 7 to 14 days. Once established, move seedlings to a bright, warm location to ensure healthy growth.

Transplant outdoors when temperatures remain consistently above 15°C. Choose a sunny site with rich, composted soil and space plants at least 60cm apart. Black Strawberry grows as a vigorous indeterminate vine that can reach over 2m in height and will require support. Fruit begins to ripen in about 60 to 70 days and will continue throughout the season.

This variety offers a rewarding combination of colour, flavour, and early productivity. It performs well in containers when pruned and supported, making it a versatile choice for gardeners looking to bring both beauty and taste to their tomato patch.
