Phytophthora Crown and Root Rot
Phytophthora spp.
Phytophthora Crown and Root Rot is a persistent soil-borne disease that targets the crown and roots of a wide range of crops. It thrives in waterlogged or poorly drained soils, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall or over-irrigation. Infected plants may appear wilted despite adequate moisture, and symptoms often include stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and eventual decay at the soil line. The infection disrupts water and nutrient uptake, and once visible, the damage is often irreversible.
This disease is exceptionally difficult to manage once established. It survives in soil for years and spreads quickly under the right conditions. For organic growers, chemical fungicides are not an option, making prevention the only practical strategy. Fortunately, advances in biological soil treatments now offer organic-friendly options that actively protect the root zone.
Water management is the first step in prevention. Avoid overwatering, improve drainage, and use raised beds or ridge planting. Systems like the Livingseeds Drip Irrigation System are ideal for maintaining moisture without saturating the root zone. Beyond cultural practices, applying biological inoculants provides active microbial protection against soil-borne threats like Phytophthora.

RhizoVital
A root-enhancing inoculant based on Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (strain FZB42). It strengthens root systems and produces natural antifungal compounds that inhibit Phytophthora. Apply to moist soil near the root zone, ideally when soil temperatures exceed 10 °C.

Note: For maximum protection, begin with clean transplants and apply RhizoVital preventatively. This product works best in healthy, oxygen-rich soil environments, so avoid compacted or over-saturated beds. Rotate susceptible crops and never replant into infected soil without first rehabilitating it.
