Solanum lycopersicum
Available for purchase from 1 July 2025
The Burmese Sour Tomato is a striking heirloom variety from Myanmar, traditionally grown in the hot, humid climate around Yangon. Known for its deeply ribbed, bright red fruit and its distinctive tangy flavour, this tomato is a staple in local markets and kitchens across the region. It thrives as a vigorous indeterminate vine, producing clusters of scarlet fruit that range in size from saladette to small slicer, depending on growing conditions.
Unlike the sweet tomatoes common to Western palates, the Burmese Sour is celebrated for its bright, tart flavour. The flesh is juicy and smooth, with a satiny texture that stands up well to heat. It is ideal for cooked dishes like stews, curries, chutneys, and richly layered sauces. In Myanmar, it is a key ingredient in tamarind-spiced salads and tomato-based relishes, offering an authentic flavour that elevates traditional cuisine.
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Sow them 5mm deep in a warm, moist Germination Mix and maintain soil temperatures between 21 and 29°C, preferably using a Germination Heating Pad. Germination typically takes 7 to 14 days. Once seedlings appear, provide strong light and transplant into larger containers if needed until outdoor conditions are suitable.
Transplant into the garden after all frost has passed and night temperatures are reliably above 15 degrees Celsius. Choose a site with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants at least 60 centimetres apart, and support vines with cages or stakes, as they can grow up to two metres tall. Fruits begin to ripen around 80 days after transplanting and may continue into the late season with proper care.
This variety is highly productive and well adapted to South African summer conditions. It responds well to deep watering, mulching, and light pruning to improve air flow and ripening. Burmese Sour is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a tart, richly flavoured tomato that brings depth and authenticity to savoury dishes.
