Melothria scabra
Available for purchase from 1 July 2025
The cucamelon, also known as the Mexican sour gherkin or mouse melon, is a charming vining plant native to Mexico and Central America. This heirloom species has been grown for centuries and has recently captured the imagination of modern gardeners thanks to its tiny, watermelon-lookalike fruits and resilient growth habit. Each grape-sized fruit boasts a crunchy texture and a flavour that perfectly balances cucumber with a refreshing twist of lime.
Cucamelons are culinary gems. Their tangy snap makes them excellent additions to salads, snack platters, or pickling jars. They also shine as cocktail garnishes, lending their vibrant shape and zesty flavour to drinks and charcuterie boards. Children especially delight in harvesting and snacking on these mini treats straight off the vine.
For best results, sow cucamelon seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before your last expected frost. Use the Livingseeds Germination Mix, apply consistent bottom heat with Livingseeds Heating Pads, and start in biodegradable cells using the potmaker or plugmaster. Seeds germinate in 7–14 days when kept around 23°C.
Transplant seedlings once all danger of frost has passed, giving them a sunny, sheltered site with rich, well-drained soil. These vines benefit from a sturdy trellis and will climb readily, making them perfect for vertical gardens. Apply Talborne Organics VitaGrow at transplant, and switch to Vita Fruit and Flower once flowering begins. Fruits are ready to harvest in about 65–75 days and should be picked when firm and about the size of a grape to maintain quality and encourage continuous production.
