Damping Off
Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Phytophthora, and Fusarium spp.
Damping-off is a silent seedling killer that every gardener dreads. It strikes just as your seedlings begin to show promise. Collapsing stems, yellowing leaves, or entire trays of young plants failing to emerge are all telltale signs. Caused by a mix of soil-borne fungi and oomycetes, damping-off thrives in damp, stagnant environments, especially during cooler periods. It is most common during germination and the first few weeks of growth, making early intervention absolutely critical.
Once it sets in, damping-off wipes out seedlings quickly and unevenly. There are no second chances, only wasted seed, time, and frustration. Organic gardeners face added challenges, as chemical options are neither desirable nor permitted. Prevention is therefore the only effective strategy. Thankfully, it works extremely well when the right practices and biological tools are used consistently.
Start with clean seed trays, sterilised tools, and a well-draining, high-quality germination mix. Provide bottom heat to promote quick and even germination. Avoid overwatering and ensure good air circulation around seedlings. For an added layer of protection, introduce beneficial microbes like Eco-T to colonise the root zone and suppress harmful fungi.

Eco-T
A powerful root-zone inoculant containing Trichoderma asperellum. Eco-T protects seedlings by colonising root surfaces and outcompeting damping-off pathogens such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora. Apply at sowing and again at transplant for continued protection.
-
Note: Eco-T is best used preventatively, not curatively. Incorporate it into germination programs and maintain good cultural practices to reduce pressure from damping-off pathogens.
