Capsicum annuum
Available for purchase from 1 July 2025
Golden Nugget is a charming chilli variety developed in the United States and celebrated for both its ornamental flair and culinary bite. The compact, bushy plants are topped with creamy variegated foliage, making them a standout in containers, borders, or kitchen gardens. As the fruits mature, they transform from green to deep purple and finally settle into a rich golden orange, offering a dazzling visual display at every stage.
This pepper brings more than just beauty. The small lantern-shaped pods pack a lively punch, registering between 35,000 and 50,000 Scoville Heat Units. Their fruity flavour adds depth to hot sauces, salsas, and pickles, while the bright colour makes them ideal for garnishing dishes with flair. Dried and ground, they yield a vibrant powder with a warm, spicy finish.
To germinate, sow seeds 5 mm deep in seedling trays or pots filled with a fine, well-drained mix. Maintain a consistent soil temperature of 25 to 30°C. Using a heat mat or placing trays in a warm, protected spot will improve success. Expect germination in 7 to 14 days. Transplant seedlings when they have at least two sets of true leaves and nighttime temperatures stay above 12°C.
Golden Nugget grows best in full sun and rich, fertile soil with regular feeding. Space plants 30 to 45 cm apart in beds or large containers. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Fruits are ready to harvest around 80 to 90 days from transplanting, once they’ve reached their final orange hue. Regular picking encourages ongoing production throughout the warm season.
