Ocimum basilicum

Anise Basil, also known as licorice basil, is a bold and fragrant cultivar traditionally grown in Persia, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa. This striking basil stands out with its maroon stems, dark green lance-shaped leaves, and pale pink to purple flowers. Beloved for its distinctive anise-scented foliage, it has long been used in culinary and medicinal traditions across cultures, and is a favourite among gardeners seeking both ornamental and functional herbs.

Its flavour is richly sweet with a gentle spice, blending the sharpness of black liquorice with the warm undertones of clove and mint. This makes it an excellent match for tomato dishes, grilled fish, eggplant, and fresh fruit salads. The leaves also brew beautifully into a calming tea, and the aromatic compounds are known to aid digestion, freshen breath, and soothe mild respiratory complaints.

Sow Anise Basil seeds in seedling trays filled with well-draining mix, pressing them lightly onto the surface as they need light to germinate. Keep consistently moist and warm, between 21 and 29°C, and expect germination within 6 to 10 days. Transplant once seedlings have developed their second set of true leaves.

Plant into full sun, spacing them 20 to 30 cm apart in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Pinch back flower spikes early to encourage bushier leaf growth and extend harvest. Plants grow 45 to 90 cm tall and are slow to bolt, making them suitable for long-season gardens. Beneficial insects are strongly attracted to its flowers, while its scent helps deter some common pests.
