Cucumis metuliferus

One of South Africa's unknown treasures, also known as African Horned Cucumber, Kiwano, or wild cucumber.

The flavour changes as it ripens from sweet citrus (green) to a banana/kiwi fruit/citrus flavour when ripe (yellow). This rewarding cucumber is an easy-to-grow variety with a lime-green jelly-like interior. Simply scoop out with a teaspoon for a simple and quick treat for all ages. Add a pinch of salt or sugar to increase flavour.

Standard packet contains approx. 15 seeds

Awesome! Be aware the vine gets massive, and it is quite prickly (both leaves & stems) so gloves are recommended to handle and trim back. Positively dripping in fruits, really heavy producer. Fruits are thorny (actually pierced my skin on one) so handle with care. They are great in a relish! Hubby eats them straight out the skin like a granadilla. Next season I'll plant a vine on the fence rather than in my grow cage lol.

I started a veggie garden in October last year, and it's been a great joy seeing all of the different vegetables grow and bear fruit. Though it's been quite a learning curve, we've had a lot of success with almost all of our plants thriving. The only exceptions being the tomatoes, which were all killed off by two weeks of torrential rain over December, and the Horned Cucumber. For some reason the plant grew nicely but never flowered and thus bore no fruit. The white cucumbers, in the bed next door, had a great harvest, and we had more cucumbers from them than we could eat, but nothing from the Horned cucumber.

I'm not going to give it a rating as I'm sure it's either my climate, I live in Hillcrest - Durban, or I'm doing something wrong. Time will tell!
*Seems I need to give it a rating after all.

These are some of the most amazing things I have grown. First time this season for me. I gave two small sections along out boundry wall next to the pool(very well composted) only planted 3 and boy did they go mental. I trimmed them way back as our next door folk dont like over hanging plants(this was a struggle to keep up with)these vines love space and produce very well. They are amazing in all stages of growth green for salad and yellow for a refreshing snack or worked into deserts.

I tried these for fun. They are so easy to grown and produce wonderful, tasty and interesting looking fruit. Great talking point with all my visitors and friends. Definitely recommend these to anybody.

These go crazy in my vegetable garden. I have so many seedlings that come up every year. I usually eat them when still green. Must try them when they turn orange. A little salt and vinegar sprinkled over makes them delicious.
