Pisum sativum
Mangetout Kennedy is a vigorous climbing pea bred from Oregon Sugar Pod, with improved yields and early harvests. Its dark green pods are sweet and tender, ideal for mangetout use or as shelled peas if left to mature. It performs well in cool seasons and shows good resistance to fusarium wilt and powdery mildew.
Mangetout Kennedy is a high-performing snow pea bred as an improvement on the well-known Oregon Sugar Pod line. The vines grow tall and require support, producing large, dark green pods with a sweet, fresh flavour. This variety is suited to home gardens where a fast-setting and high-yielding plant is needed.
The pods can be harvested young and flat for mangetout use, or left to fill out for use as shelled green peas. Their sweet flavour and crisp texture make them suitable for stir-fries, steaming or raw eating. Early setting allows for quicker harvests than many other snow peas, making it a good choice for cool-season succession planting.
Seeds should be sown directly into well-prepared soil at a depth of 2.5 to 3 cm. Plants should be spaced 5 to 8 cm apart in rows 40 to 60 cm apart. A trellis or netting is required as the vines are climbing and produce over an extended period. Mangetout Kennedy prefers full sun and cool temperatures. Maintain even moisture during flowering and pod development.
Pods are ready for harvest in about 60 to 65 days, depending on conditions. Pick regularly to maintain pod quality and encourage continued flowering. This variety handles disease pressure well, with resistance to fusarium wilt as well as excellent powdery mildew resistance.
