• Paul Robeson Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Available for purchase from 1 July 2025

The Paul Robeson tomato is a richly storied Russian heirloom named in honour of the legendary American singer, actor and civil rights advocate. This striking variety bears medium to large brick-red fruit with dusky green shoulders, and has won accolades for its distinctive flavour, including “Best of Show” at the Carmel TomatoFest in the early 2000s. Revered by tomato enthusiasts worldwide, it offers a unique fusion of cultural heritage and outstanding garden performance.

In the kitchen, Paul Robeson delivers an exotic, earthy flavour profile with a luscious depth and perfectly balanced acidity and sweetness. These tomatoes are exceptional for slicing, starring in Caprese salads, or enhancing artisan sandwiches. Their dense flesh and complex flavour also lend themselves beautifully to sauces and slow-roasted dishes.

Start seeds indoors in late winter to early spring, about 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow 5 mm deep in a warm, bright area or use a seedling heat mat to maintain a steady temperature of 21–24 °C. Transplant seedlings once they have at least two sets of true leaves and are hardened off.

Plant out in full sun once all danger of frost has passed. Paul Robeson is an indeterminate variety, meaning it will continue producing throughout the season. Stake or cage for support, and provide consistent moisture and rich, well-drained soil. Expect fruit in mid to late summer, around 80–90 days from transplanting, when tomatoes are fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch.

Standard packet contains approx. 25 seeds
