Pisum sativum
Golden Sweet is a tall snow pea variety that produces bright yellow, flat pods with a sweet, mild flavour. The plants have climbing vines and ornamental purple flowers. It matures in about 60 to 70 days and is best grown in cool weather with trellising support.
Golden Sweet is an heirloom snow pea believed to have originated in India. It is known for its striking golden-yellow pods and vibrant purple flowers, making it both a productive and ornamental choice in the garden. The vines grow vigorously to around 1.5 to 1.8 metres tall and must be trellised for best results. The pods are flat, thin and edible whole, typical of snow peas.
The flavour is sweet and mild, making it ideal for raw snacking, light steaming or tossing into stir-fries. The yellow pods retain their colour fairly well when cooked and provide a visual pop in salads or vegetable dishes. Harvesting the pods while still small and tender ensures the best eating quality, as they can become tough or stringy if left too long.
Sow seeds directly into moist, well-drained soil at a depth of about 2.5 cm. Provide a trellis or fence early, as the vines begin to climb quickly. Seedlings should be spaced 5-8 cm apart. Golden Sweet grows best in full sun and cool temperatures. Avoid sowing in hot weather, as heat can limit pod production and quality.
Pods are typically ready for harvest between 60 and 70 days from sowing. Pick regularly to encourage continued production and to keep pods tender. This variety can produce over an extended season if kept well-watered and consistently harvested.
Golden Sweet has very strong resistance to Powdery Mildew.
