Pisium sativum
Oregon Giant is a compact snow pea that produces extra-large, sweet, flat pods. It grows to about 90 cm tall and matures in around 60 days. It is resistant to several common pea diseases and does best in cool weather. A top choice for early-season productivity and large, tender pods.
Oregon Giant is a snow pea variety bred at Oregon State University for its pod size, flavour and disease resistance. The vines reach about 90 cm and do best when grown on a low trellis or mesh. It produces very large, flat pods around 10 to 13 cm long that remain tender if picked before peas inside begin to swell.
The pods are sweet and mild with a soft, crisp bite. They are excellent for stir-fries, steaming or eating raw. The large pod size gives more flexibility with harvest timing, which makes this variety forgiving for new gardeners. Oregon Giant is especially suited to cooler months, providing dependable harvests in early spring or autumn.
Sow seeds directly into well-drained soil at a depth of 2.5 to 3 cm. Space plants about 5 cm apart in rows spaced 40 to 60 cm apart. Oregon Giant prefers full sun and regular moisture, especially once pods begin to form. Support with a low trellis helps to keep the pods clean and easy to harvest.
Harvest usually begins around 60 days after sowing. Pick pods while flat and fully expanded but before the internal peas develop too far. Regular picking encourages new flowers and extends the harvest period.
Oregon Giant is resistant to pea enation mosaic virus, powdery mildew and Fusarium wilt race 1.
