Capsicum chinense

A.k.a. Douglah Chocolate, this variety is rated by many to be the hottest chilli they have tasted, and apparently, it far surpasses other 7 Pots in heat. On the Livingseeds Farm, we found it slow-ripening and not a particularly prolific producer of fruits. However, those of you in warmer parts of the country will have much better production.

First of all this chilli is seriously hot. If you consider a habanero hot, stay away. If you want to make a hot sauce or cook with this chilli ensure adequate ventilation. And use gloves when slicing and dicing. Start the seeds as early as possible indoors July/August. I used a heat mat. Seeds can take 3-4 weeks to germinate. It took about 4 months after germination before I saw the first flower. Yield was not that great in the first year. I pruned the plant back for winter and moved it to a more sheltered area. Moved the plant back out in mid September. I have been picking pods since mid December 2017 and it is still going strong mid February. Great chilli!

My Doughlah tree is producing a lot of fruit. I live in Cape Town and its the beginning of autumn. I still have a lot of flowers appearing. This chilli is very strong, but has great flavour.
