Flies - House-Stable-etc

Scientific Name: Diptera spp.

Flies in the garden aren’t just a nuisance. They signal that conditions are right for rapid pest development, especially in warm, humid spaces with organic-rich soils. These irritating winged invaders often start as unseen larvae gnawing through roots or decaying matter. By the time adults are flying around your plants, a new generation is already hatching below the surface.

Tackling fly problems is always best before the population gets out of hand; once they’ve settled into a productive lifecycle, it's just that much harder to control. Controlling outbreaks can feel like you are not winning the battle, and it comes with a cost in time, effort, and increased frustration levels.

It makes far more sense to prevent fly outbreaks before they start. Prevention is always more cost-effective, more sustainable, and less disruptive to your summer season. Integrated strategies give gardeners the upper hand long before flies become a catastrophic issue.

Livingseeds gives you a range of solutions, and we strongly recommend that you implement these control methods before fly populations become frustratingly noticeable.

Livingseeds Organic Fly Control Solutions:

Beneficial Insects

  • Macro-Mite
Predatory mite (Macrocheles robustulus) targeting fly eggs, larvae, and pupae.
Use rate: 100-500 mites per m². Repeat at least three times over 6-10 weeks.
Best results in moist, organic-rich soil above 15 °C.

  • Bio Wasp
A mix of parasitoid wasps that attack adult flies.
Must be used as part of an integrated program, not a standalone control.

Traps/Monitoring

  • Horiver Roller Trap (15 cm & 30 cm)
Yellow sticky roller traps that attract and trap adult flies using visual cues.
Effective when placed above or near plant canopies. Do not use these roller traps if you are releasing the Bio Wasp above.

  • iCatchi Fly Trap PRO & Bait
A reusable mechanical fly trap that catches and dehydrates trapped flies.
Uses non-toxic bait to attract adults. Ideal for ongoing perimeter control. Works best when combined with beneficial insects that target larvae and eggs.

  • iCatchi Bait Kit
Refill kit for use with the iCatchi PRO trap.
Contains a natural protein-based bait to enhance trap performance.
