• Petite Yellow

Citrullus lanatus

Available for purchase from 1 July 2025

Petite Yellow is a compact icebox-style watermelon variety known for its early maturity, small size, and brilliant yellow flesh. Developed for shorter growing seasons and small-space gardens, this round watermelon reaches just 2 to 3 kilograms at full size, making it perfect for single households or small families. Its light green rind is striped with darker green and conceals crisp, juicy flesh that glows golden when sliced. This charming melon offers all the flavour of larger watermelons in a more manageable form.

With a flavour that is sweet and aromatic, Petite Yellow delivers a refreshing burst of sunshine with every bite. The flesh is dense and crackles under a knife, holding its shape well in fruit salads. Perfect for snacking, summer picnics, or chilled wedges straight from the fridge, it is as visually delightful as it is tasty.

For successful germination, sow seeds 1 to 2 cm deep in trays or directly into warm soil once all danger of frost has passed. Maintain soil temperatures between 21 and 27°C for best results. Germination takes 5 to 10 days. Although direct sowing is common, starting seeds indoors and transplanting after the last frost ensures a strong start.

Petite Yellow thrives in full sun with well-drained, compost-rich soil. Space plants at least 90 cm apart in rows spaced 1.5 metres apart to give vines room to run. Keep soil consistently moist during flowering and fruit development. Fruits are ready for harvest around 80 days from sowing, when the tendril nearest the fruit dries, the skin dulls, and the underside turns buttery yellow. A hollow sound when tapped also indicates ripeness.
