Solanum lycopersicum
Available for purchase from 1 July 2025
Sgt Pepper’s tomato is an arresting oxheart variety, bred by Jason Haynes and Blane Horton from a cross between OSU Blue (P20) and German Red Strawberry. Originally cultivated in the United States, it showcases the vivid potential of anthocyanin-rich tomatoes. Each fruit displays a stunning blend of soft pink to ruby red with deep purple shoulders that deepen in strong sunlight. This unique heart-shaped tomato is both a visual and culinary standout.
The flavour of Sgt Pepper’s tomato is sweet, meaty, and complex, with earthy undertones and a satisfying umami finish. Low in seeds and high in flesh density, it slices beautifully and lends itself to fresh eating, sauces, and roasting. A versatile addition to your kitchen garden, it bridges ornamental beauty with exceptional culinary performance.
Start seeds indoors from late winter, about 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. Sow 5 mm deep into a quality seedling mix and keep warm at temperatures between 22 and 25 °C. Bottom heat is highly recommended for improved germination, and seedlings benefit from strong light once emerged. Harden off before transplanting to avoid shock.
Transplant outdoors in full sun once all risk of frost has passed. Sgt Pepper’s is an indeterminate grower and needs robust staking or caging to support its large, heavy fruit and vigorous vines that can reach 2 metres. Expect first fruit around 70 to 80 days from transplanting. Harvest when the base blushes pink and shoulders turn a rich, dusky purple, with a gentle give to the touch.
