Pisum sativum

Oregon Sugar Pod II is a compact snow pea variety bred for high yield and excellent disease resistance. It produces flat, crisp pods about 10 cm long, often in pairs. Plants mature in around 60 to 68 days and are ideal for small gardens or container growing in cooler seasons.

Oregon Sugar Pod II was developed at Oregon State University to meet the demand for a high-yielding, disease-resistant snow pea. The plants reach about 70 to 75 cm tall and produce smooth, bright green pods that are best picked before the peas inside start to swell. This variety often sets two pods per node, which makes for a highly productive plant over a long picking window.

The pods are mild and crisp, perfect for eating fresh, steaming or stir-frying. They hold their texture well in light cooking and are popular in both Western and Asian-style dishes. The thin, tender pod walls make this variety ideal for snap eating or short blanching before freezing.

Sow seeds directly into moist, well-drained soil at a depth of about 2.5 cm. Space plants 5 to 8 cm apart in rows 40 to 60 cm apart. The vines are semi-dwarf and usually manage well without support, but a short trellis can help with airflow and clean harvesting. Oregon Sugar Pod II prefers full sun and cool-season temperatures for best growth.

Expect pods to begin forming around 60 to 68 days from sowing. For best quality, harvest regularly before pods over-mature. Frequent picking keeps the plant productive and maintains flavour and tenderness.

Oregon Sugar Pod II is resistant to pea enation mosaic virus, powdery mildew and fusarium wilt race 1.

Using Peaflo-Rhizobium bacteria when planting your pea seed is the most cost-effective way of putting nitrogen-fixing bacteria into your soil, creating healthier soil for a more productive harvest.
