A'Grappoli D'Inverno, meaning “winter grape” in Italian, is a time-honoured heirloom tomato from the Puglia region in southern Italy. Traditionally grown for its long storage life, this variety was once a common sight hanging in clusters from rafters, supplying households with tomatoes well into the colder months. With its compact habit and consistent yield, it remains a favourite for growers seeking both flavour and function.

The fruit is small and oval, resembling a grape or plum, and weighs between 20 and 60 grams. Its red skin is smooth and slightly firm, which contributes to its long keeping ability. Fresh, the flavour is sweet with a gentle acidity, and when dried or roasted it intensifies, becoming rich and slightly tangy. This makes it an excellent tomato for fresh eating, preserving, and slow cooking.

Start seeds indoors six to eight weeks before your last frost. Sow 5 millimetres deep in a well-drained germination mix and maintain a temperature of 22 to 26 degrees Celsius for even germination. Seedlings typically emerge in 7 to 14 days. Provide strong light after germination to encourage healthy growth.

Transplant outdoors once any risk of frost has passed, allowing spacing of 50 cm between plants. Although often described as bushy, A'Grappoli D'Inverno can grow over a metre tall and benefits from staking or trellising. It thrives in rich, composted soil with full sun and consistent watering. Fruit ripens about 65 to 75 days after transplanting, forming in large clusters that are well suited to traditional hanging methods.

This variety is particularly valued for its ability to store for many months after harvest. Before cooler frosts set in, hang clusters in a dry, shaded place with good airflow and enjoy a supply of tomatoes long after the growing season ends. A'Grappoli D'Inverno offers flavour, practicality, and old-world charm in every bite.
