Solanum lycopersicum

Available for purchase from 1 July 2025

Mr Stripey is a showstopper among heirloom tomatoes, admired for its generous size and beautiful bi-colour striping. This variety dates back to early 19th-century American gardens and is not to be confused with the smaller Tigerella. Mr Stripey produces large, beefsteak-style fruits with golden shoulders and deep red striping, creating a marbled effect that continues through the flesh. It is an indeterminate grower with tall, vining plants that require staking or trellising throughout the season.

The flavour of Mr Stripey is exceptionally sweet and mild, with very low acidity, making it a perfect choice for those who prefer a gentler tomato taste. Its flesh is soft and juicy with a high sugar content, ideal for slicing into fresh salads, summer platters, or pairing with soft cheeses. Although less suited to sauces due to its low acid, its flavour and texture are best appreciated raw.

To germinate successfully, sow seeds 5 to 8 mm deep in a well-draining seedling mix 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. Maintain soil temperatures between 21 and 27 °C. Use bottom heat if possible to encourage quick, even sprouting.

Once all risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed, transplant into full sun in rich, well-drained soil. Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart and provide sturdy support as vines can exceed 2 m. Fruits mature in approximately 80 days from transplant. Regular feeding, deep watering, and consistent mulching will help produce large, flavourful fruit. Pick when the skin has turned golden with vibrant red striping and the fruit has a slight give when gently squeezed.
