Turnip
A traditional European crop, the entire turnip plant can be used: roots, leaves, and even flowers.
Ensure turnips are planted into soil that does not have a high nitrogen content, otherwise, you will sacrifice root production in favour of leaves. Sow directly into the garden 6 weeks before your first frost. They “hold” very well in the winter soil, and you will be able to pick over your turnip stand the entire winter.
Plant more than one variety to experience the subtle nuances in flavour and take advantage of the differences in days to maturity.
