• Urbikany Tall Bush Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Available for purchase from 1 July 2025

Urbikany is a compact, early-bearing tomato variety that hails from Eastern Europe, likely bred in the former Czechoslovakia. Known as a “tall bush” tomato, this determinate variety stands out for its excellent balance between manageable growth and generous yield. With vines reaching just under a metre in height, Urbikany offers reliable, early-season fruit production ideal for small gardens, containers, and raised beds.

The fruits are smooth-skinned and bright red, with a classic round shape and sizes ranging from saladette to small slicer, typically around 60 to 170 grams. Their juicy flesh delivers a full, well-rounded flavour with a pleasing blend of sweetness and acidity, making them equally suited to fresh slicing, cooking, or small-batch preserving.

Sow seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. Plant seeds 5 mm deep in a quality germination mix and maintain a steady soil temperature of 21 to 27°C. Germination typically occurs within 7 to 14 days under ideal conditions. Provide strong light once sprouted to encourage sturdy seedling development.

Transplant outdoors once all danger of frost has passed, spacing plants at least 50 cm apart. Urbikany prefers full sun and well-drained, compost-rich soil. Though determinate, the plants benefit from light staking or support to keep their heavy trusses off the ground. Fruit begins to ripen in as little as 58 days after transplanting, making this an excellent choice for gardeners seeking an early, dependable crop.

With its compact form, fast maturity, and consistently high yields, Urbikany is a trustworthy and productive tomato that earns its place in both beginner and experienced gardens alike.
