Borago officinalis

Borage is a generous and easy-growing annual herb known for its bright blue, star-shaped flowers and gently bristled leaves. Native to the Mediterranean and long favoured in European gardens, this heirloom herb has been grown since Roman times for both its beauty and its culinary and medicinal value. Plants reach 60 to 90 centimetres tall and are a favourite in companion planting, attracting bees while supporting tomatoes, strawberries, and brassicas.

The flowers have a light cucumber-honey flavour and are edible, making them a charming garnish for drinks, desserts, and salads. The leaves also carry a cool, cucumber-like note and can be used in teas or as a fresh addition to summer soups. In traditional remedies, borage has been used to soothe the nerves, support urinary health, and improve digestion. Its seeds are also the source of borage oil, a rich plant-based source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), prized for skin and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Sow seeds directly into the garden in spring, planting them 1 to 1.5 centimetres deep. Borage prefers well-drained soil in full sun and germinates within 5 to 10 days at soil temperatures of 18 to 25°C. It self-seeds freely, making it a long-term feature in herb beds and pollinator zones.

Once established, borage is tolerant of neglect and light drought, and will continue to flower throughout the season. Harvest young leaves and flowers as needed. Regular picking encourages new growth and extended blooming.
