Pisum sativum
Mammoth Melting Sugar is a tall, heirloom snow pea known for its extra-large, flat, sweet pods. It produces heavily over a long period and thrives in cool weather. Matures in around 74 days and requires a trellis. It remains tender even when pods are allowed to grow larger than usual.
Mammoth Melting Sugar is a historic snow pea introduced by W. Atlee Burpee in 1893. It has earned a reputation for large, sweet pods and exceptional yields. The vines grow vigorously to about 1.5 metres tall and require trellising. Its long, flat pods are stringless and stay tender and sweet even as they reach 10 to 12 cm in length. Plants produce bi-coloured flowers that make it visually striking in the garden.
The pods are crisp, juicy and best harvested when full-sized but before peas inside begin to harden. They are perfect for stir-fries, steaming or eating raw. Mammoth Melting Sugar holds its flavour well when cooked and can also be frozen after blanching for later use.
Sow seeds directly into moist, fertile soil about 3 to 4 cm deep. Space plants 3 to 5 cm apart in rows 75 to 90 cm apart. Provide a strong trellis or netting early, as the vines grow rapidly. This variety thrives in cool temperatures and full sun. Consistent watering is important during flowering and pod set, but avoid overwatering.
Harvest begins around 74 days from sowing. Pick frequently to encourage further flowering and pod development. In cooler regions, a second sowing can extend the harvest period. While generally reliable, ensure good airflow around the plants to help prevent powdery mildew in damp conditions.
Mammoth Melting Sugar is reported to have some resistance to Wilt and good resistance to Powdery Mildew.
