Vigna sesquipedalis

Heirloom. The yard long bean is a traditional oriental bean that never fails to impress. They are delicious, quick addition to any meal and can be snapped into short pieces. It's really around 40-50 cm long, but still a great bean for salads, snacking and dips. Pick before the beans fill out for the best flavour otherwise they tend to go a bit spongy

Planting:

Beans are best planted straight into the ground where they are to grow. Beans do not enjoy nitrogen added to the soil. In fact they will put their own in for you. They do however enjoy some organic matter in their soil. If picked often they will continue to produce until the plant is exhausted. You last planting month for runner or pole beans is Dec and for bush beans its mid-late January.

Standard packet contains approx. 25 seeds

Petite packet contains approx. 10 seeds

I really wanted these to work - I love stir fries and enjoy eating this variety of bean. Unfortunately for me the plants seem to struggle getting established and have not had a good success rate. I think I'll give the red variety a try next time.

Amazing plants! I am getting beans right into May! I planted in containers in full sun and they do very well.

Slow growth to begin with but once they got going they kept on! Average producer but keeps producing over a long time. Taste isn't to everyone's liking, and they are a bit limited with what you can do with them. Great in stirfries, and delicious as a standalone dish fried in ginger, honey, sesame oil and soy sauce. Must pick at the right time. Great fun to have in the garden.

I grew mine in a container. Reached lengths of more than 30 cm.
Did not bear many pods. Least favorite taste of all the beans I grew.

This stuff is seriously half a metre long and it is genuinely delicious! I know right? A single pod! I have a small garden, but I sure am glad I gave this one variety a try. I am seed saving, next year, I am going tiny micro bean farming in the backyard all over the fence right around. I am sure the neighbours and the families further down would be well fed too! Ridiculously delicious and prolific.
